Hate Crimes

Hate crimes are crimes committed against another person that are motivated by one or more of the following characteristics of the victim:

• Mental or physical disability.

• Gender,

• Nationality

• Race or ethnicity

• Religion

• Sexual orientation,

• Association with a person or group of one or more of these characteristics.

A hate crime can be a crime within itself or it can act as a sentencing enhancement. Your punishment, therefore, depends on whether the offense you committed is classified as a felony or a misdemeanor. Either way, if you are found guilty of any offense and that it is found to be a hate crime, you face more serious penalties.
