Theft Offenses

Theft offenses can carry serious penalties, especially if there are other charges against you, such as weapon offenses. Some of the most common theft charges are:

  • Petty Theft – Misdemeanor theft of property valued up to $950. The maximum penalty is a firm not to exceed $1,000 and/or a maximum of one year in county jail.
  • Grand Theft – Theft of property valued at more than $950. This conviction may be punished by time in a state prison.
  • Burglary – illegally breaking into any building or dwelling with the intent to commit a felony and/or theft within. This offense is punishable by incarceration in state prison.
  • Receiving Stolen Property – Receiving or purchasing property that you know, or should know, is stolen.
  • Robbery – Using violence, force, or threats to take property from another person. This is a serious felony and punishable by time in state prison.
  • Carjacking – Using violence, force, or threats to take a vehicle from another person. This is a serious felony and punishable by incarceration in state prison.

Depending on your criminal record, the facts surrounding your case, and the charges you face an experienced criminal defense attorney can often negotiate and argue to get more serious theft offenses reduced to less serious charges.
